Quick Answer
“Tick fever” is the common name for tick-borne blood diseases in dogs — mainly Ehrlichiosis and Babesiosis — spread by the brown dog tick. It is life-threatening but largely preventable, and it kills Bangalore dogs every year. Warning signs include fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, pale or yellow gums, nosebleeds or unexplained bruising, and dark urine. Because Bangalore’s mild climate keeps ticks active year-round, prevention must be continuous: a fast-acting tick preventive, ideally with a repellent collar (Seresto) for high-exposure dogs, plus daily tick checks. If you suspect tick fever, see a vet urgently — caught early it is very treatable (doxycycline for Ehrlichiosis; specific anti-protozoal drugs for Babesiosis); left late it can be fatal.
Of all the preventable illnesses a Bangalore dog can get, tick fever is among the most dangerous — and among the most heartbreaking, because it so often follows a lapse in tick prevention that would have cost a few hundred rupees a month. This guide explains what tick fever actually is, how to spot it early, and how to make sure your dog never gets it.
What “Tick Fever” Really Means
“Tick fever” isn’t one disease — it’s an umbrella term for several tick-borne infections. The two that matter most in India are:
- Ehrlichiosis (Ehrlichia canis) — a bacterial infection of white blood cells. It has an acute phase, a hidden “subclinical” phase, and a dangerous chronic phase that can suppress the bone marrow.
- Babesiosis (Babesia species) — a protozoal parasite that destroys red blood cells, causing anaemia that can become severe very quickly.
Dogs can also be co-infected with more than one at once, and with related organisms (Anaplasma, Hepatozoon), which complicates and worsens the illness.
How Dogs Catch It
Tick fever is transmitted when an infected brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) attaches and feeds. Crucially, the tick usually has to stay attached for a period of hours before it passes on the infection — which is exactly why preventing attachment (repellents) and removing ticks promptly both matter so much. The brown dog tick also breeds happily indoors and in kennels, so an infestation can persist in the home environment.
Why Bangalore Is High-Risk
Bangalore’s mild, stable temperatures keep tick populations active all twelve months — there is no winter die-off to give dogs a break. Add dense urban dog populations, shared parks and green spaces, and the tick’s ability to live indoors, and you have year-round exposure. The dogs that arrive at clinics critically ill with tick fever in January are proof that “seasonal” prevention is not enough here. (Our flea & tick prevention guide covers the year-round argument in full.)
Signs and Symptoms to Watch For
Tick fever can look vague at first, which is why it’s missed. Watch for:
- Fever, lethargy and dullness
- Loss of appetite and weight loss
- Pale gums (anaemia) or yellow gums/eyes (jaundice, more with Babesia)
- Bleeding signs — nosebleeds, pinpoint red spots on the gums or belly, easy bruising (from a dropping platelet count, classic for Ehrlichia)
- Dark or coffee-coloured urine (red blood cell breakdown)
- Swollen lymph nodes, enlarged abdomen, or lameness/joint pain
Emergency signs — collapse, very pale or yellow gums, heavy bleeding, or laboured breathing — mean go to a vet immediately.
How It’s Diagnosed
A vet will typically combine:
- A blood smear — sometimes the organisms are visible inside blood cells
- A complete blood count (CBC) — a low platelet count is a hallmark of Ehrlichiosis; anaemia points to Babesiosis
- Rapid antibody/antigen tests (e.g. SNAP-type kits) and, where needed, PCR to confirm the exact organism
Early, accurate diagnosis changes outcomes — which is why any of the warning signs above deserves a prompt vet visit rather than a wait-and-see.
Treatment
The good news: caught early, tick fever is usually treatable.
- Ehrlichiosis responds to the antibiotic doxycycline, typically given for around 28 days. Most dogs improve within days when treated early.
- Babesiosis needs specific anti-protozoal medication chosen by the vet based on the species involved.
- Supportive care — fluids, and in severe anaemia a blood transfusion — may be needed for very sick dogs.
Prognosis is good with early treatment, but guarded in chronic Ehrlichiosis, where prolonged infection has damaged the bone marrow. That gap between “very treatable” and “sometimes fatal” is almost entirely about how early it’s caught — and, better still, whether it’s prevented at all.
Prevention — the Part That Actually Saves Lives
| Measure | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Year-round tick preventive | Oral isoxazolines (NexGard, Bravecto) kill ticks reliably — but after the tick bites. Continuous cover, never seasonal. |
| A repellent collar for high-risk dogs | A Seresto collar repels ticks before they attach (flumethrin) — adding a “repel-before-bite” layer that’s especially valuable against tick fever. Ideal paired with an oral product for trekking/farm/high-grass dogs. |
| Daily tick checks | Run your hands over the head, ears, neck, armpits, groin and between the toes. Prompt removal reduces transmission risk. |
| Correct tick removal | Grasp close to the skin with a tick remover or fine tweezers and pull straight out — don’t twist, crush, or use matches/oil. |
| Treat the environment | The brown dog tick breeds indoors — treat bedding, cracks and kennels if an infestation is established, and treat all pets in the home. |
When to See a Vet Urgently
Don’t wait if your dog shows fever, unusual tiredness, pale or yellow gums, any bleeding or bruising, or dark urine — especially if you’ve found a tick recently. Tick fever moves fast, and hours matter. Our vet partner at Old Airport Road can test, diagnose and start treatment, and dispense the medication from the in-store pharmacy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is tick fever in dogs curable?
Often yes — especially when caught early. Ehrlichiosis is treated with doxycycline (usually about 28 days) and most dogs recover well; Babesiosis is treated with specific anti-protozoal drugs. The prognosis worsens if the disease reaches the chronic stage, which is why early veterinary attention is so important.
How soon do symptoms appear after a tick bite?
It varies by organism — acute signs of Ehrlichiosis often appear roughly 1–3 weeks after infection, and Babesiosis can show within a similar or shorter window. Some dogs pass through a hidden phase and only show illness weeks or months later, which is why prevention and prompt testing beat waiting for obvious signs.
Can I prevent tick fever if my dog is already on NexGard or Bravecto?
These oral preventives kill ticks reliably, which greatly reduces risk — but they act after the tick bites. For high-exposure dogs, adding a repellent Seresto collar (which deters attachment) plus daily tick checks gives the most robust protection against tick-borne disease.
Can humans catch tick fever from their dog?
The specific organisms and tick species differ, and dogs don’t transmit canine tick fever directly to people. However, ticks in the shared environment can bite humans and carry their own risks, so control the tick burden in your home and garden and consult a doctor about any human tick bite.
