Bangalore has a skin and coat challenge most owners don't fully understand — and most grooming salons make worse. High-TDS BWSSB water, humid summers, year-round flea pressure, and omega-3-deficient home-cooked diets combine to create the conditions behind a large share of urban pet dermatology cases. The city's most popular breeds — Golden Retrievers, Labradors, Cocker Spaniels, French Bulldogs, Pugs — all carry elevated predisposition to atopic dermatitis and seborrhoea.

Standard salon practice — fragrance-heavy generic shampoo rinsed off in 30 seconds — does nothing for these conditions, and some ingredients actively worsen them. Our therapeutic grooming exists to do what standard grooming cannot.

Conditions We Address

Atopic Dermatitis (environmental allergy)

The most common skin disorder in Bangalore dogs — triggered by dust mites, mould, pollen and cockroach allergens. Signs: intense itching of face, paws, armpits and groin; recurrent ear infections; brown "corn-chip" staining between the toes. Protocol: anti-pruritic shampoo (phytosphingosine/colloidal oatmeal — Douxo S3 Calm is the gold standard), warm water, thorough drying, ~2-week cycle.

Malassezia Yeast Dermatitis

Musty/corn-chip odour, greasy or flaky coat, darkening in skin folds. Common in Cocker Spaniels, Basset Hounds, French Bulldogs. Protocol: antifungal shampoo (Malaseb — ketoconazole + chlorhexidine — or Douxo S3 PYO) with 5–10 minute contact time. Best confirmed by veterinary cytology.

Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD)

Even a single flea bite triggers severe reaction in sensitised dogs; classic distribution at tail base, lumbar region and inner thighs, often with hot spots. Protocol: flea-removal bath (dog-safe products — never on cats), soothing follow-up shampoo, and a year-round prevention plan.

Seborrhoeic Dermatitis

Oily (seborrhoea oleosa) or flaky (sicca) forms, common in Cocker Spaniels and Basset Hounds; underlying causes include hypothyroidism and food allergy. Protocol: Douxo S3 SEB and appropriate alternatives, followed by thorough drying.

Dull / poor coat quality

Often omega-3 deficiency, low-grade inflammation, or hard-water barrier stripping. We address the surface through grooming; our team advises on supplementation for the underlying cause.

Important note

Therapeutic grooming is most effective as part of a comprehensive plan that includes veterinary diagnosis and, where appropriate, systemic treatment. Our grooming supports but does not replace veterinary care. We can refer you to our vet partner at Old Airport Road for diagnosis and treatment coordination, and we share grooming records to track progress.

Frequently asked questions

How is therapeutic grooming different from standard grooming?

Standard grooming uses generic, fragrance-heavy shampoos rinsed off in 30 seconds — fine for healthy coats but useless or harmful for skin conditions. Therapeutic grooming uses veterinarian-recommended medicated shampoos (Douxo S3, Malaseb, Virbac) applied with the correct 5–10 minute contact time the active ingredients need, plus complete high-velocity drying. Our groomers document skin changes for vet review.

Do I need a vet diagnosis before booking therapeutic grooming?

Not necessarily. If your dog has visible skin issues (itching, odour, discolouration, hair loss) and no diagnosis yet, we recommend a vet consultation at our Old Airport Road store before or alongside grooming so the right shampoo protocol is confirmed. If you already have a diagnosis, tell us the condition and any prescribed treatments when booking.

How often should I bring my dog for therapeutic grooming?

For active skin conditions, every 2 weeks is typical — matching the skin cell turnover cycle. For maintenance after conditions are controlled, every 3–4 weeks. Our groomer advises based on your dog's condition and response.

Can therapeutic grooming cure my dog's skin condition?

It manages and reduces symptoms — it is not a cure for underlying conditions like atopic dermatitis, which are chronic and genetic. It is a critical component of an integrated management plan alongside veterinary care, not a standalone solution.
